The Combat Karate Club of Ocala was founded by Nicholas Torino after 21 years of studying the martial arts. Over the past two decades, Nicholas has enjoyed the privilege of training in various styles such as Shito-Ryu, Seibukan Shorin-Ryu, ITF Tae Kwon Do, western boxing, and submission wrestling.

These training experiences have been nothing short of wonderful. It has been an honor to train in environments that are rich in history, products of strong lineages that trace back to the founders of each respected style, and certified in their authenticity from the hombu dojos in Japan. The training has been close to the source, but something was amiss.

The training was not conducive to self-defense against habitual acts of violence.

Most, if not every self-defense drill began from an improbable scenario. Attackers stood in deep front stances, attacked with linear punches, and were overly compliant when the self-defense techniques were given in response. Regardless of the school or system, this manner of training seemed to be the norm.

It was in 2013 that Nicholas decided to take a deeper look into the origins of karate and was surprised by how drastically different it looked at its conception. Karate was actually one of the first mixed martial arts! Before karate spread to mainland Japan, it was a no-nonsense system of self-defense that included not just striking, but grappling as well. Over time, karate has become almost unrecognizable from the days of the pioneers in Okinawa.

So with the true spirit of karate in mind, we have abandoned the impractical practices of modern martial arts and instead have implemented a curriculum that is based in reality. It is an approach that favors authenticity as opposed to aesthetics, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share it with you.

To ensure this undertaking could be done without the influence or persuasion of a "traditional" governing body of martial arts, we have chosen to affiliate with the Independent Karate Schools of America and we are excited to share both our knowledge and experience with you and each of our affiliate schools.
